Do I need a referral to see a specialist?
Understanding when a referral is required, how to request one, and what to expect in the process.
One of the most common questions patients have is whether they need a referral before booking a specialist appointment. The answer depends on your situation and the type of care you are seeking.
When a referral is not required
For private psychiatric consultations in India, you can generally book directly without a referral. This is the case at most clinics including ours — you can use the online booking form to schedule an appointment at any time.
When a referral helps
A referral from your general physician or another specialist is useful if you have existing medical records, test results, or a known diagnosis that is relevant to your psychiatric care. It helps the specialist understand your full picture before your first appointment.
How to request a referral
Speak to your GP or family doctor and describe your symptoms. They will write a referral letter outlining your history and the reason for specialist review. Bring this to your first appointment.
If you are unsure
Contact the clinic directly. We are happy to advise on whether a referral is needed for your specific concern and to guide you to the right appointment type.
