Your pre-appointment checklist

3 min readMay 10, 2025

What to bring, what to expect, and how to make the most of a 15-minute consultation.

A little preparation before your appointment means you leave with more clarity and a better plan. Here is what to bring and what to think through beforehand.

What to bring

- A list of your current medications, including supplements and dosages - Any previous psychiatric or medical reports - A note of how long you have been experiencing symptoms - Your questions written down — it is easy to forget them in the moment

What to expect

The first consultation typically involves a detailed history of your symptoms, their timeline, and how they affect your daily life. The doctor may ask about sleep, appetite, work, relationships, and family history. This is not an interrogation — it is how a complete picture is built.

How to get the most from 15 minutes

Be direct. If something is embarrassing or difficult to say, say it anyway — doctors are trained to hear it without judgement. Prioritise your most important concern if time is short. Ask for a follow-up if you leave with unanswered questions.

After the appointment

If medication is prescribed, clarify the dosage, timing, and what to do if you experience side effects. Ask when you should return and what progress should look like.
