Understanding anxiety — what your body is really telling you

5 min readJun 7, 2025

Anxiety is more than persistent worry. Learn how to recognise the physical signs, when to seek help, and what evidence-based treatments look like today.

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health conditions — yet it is also one of the most misunderstood. Many people assume anxiety is simply "overthinking" or excessive worry. In reality, it is a full-body experience with physical, emotional, and behavioural dimensions.

What anxiety actually feels like

When your brain perceives a threat — real or imagined — it triggers the fight-or-flight response. Adrenaline floods your system, your heart rate increases, muscles tense, and breathing quickens. This is helpful in genuine danger, but when the alarm fires without cause, it becomes anxiety.

Common physical symptoms include chest tightness, shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness, and difficulty sleeping. Many patients first visit a physician thinking something is physically wrong before a psychiatric cause is identified.

When to seek help

If anxiety is interfering with your daily life — work, relationships, sleep, or basic tasks — it is time to speak with a professional. You do not need to be in crisis to seek support.

What treatment looks like

Evidence-based approaches include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), medication such as SSRIs, and lifestyle interventions. Most patients see significant improvement within 8–12 weeks of structured treatment.
